Increase Your Workout Performance with Peppermint Essential Oil

I love exercise. I have been a fitness instructor for 8 years and I have a degree in Kinesiology, the study of human movement. My studies focused on biomechanics, physiological effects during exercise, and exercise prescription. I have always been interested in the effects essential oils have on physical performance. I had heard of a study that was done that took a small sampling of college aged men and gave them peppermint essential oil internally prior to exercise and then they performed a series of tests before ingestion and after ingestion over 10 days. What they found was phenomenal. All aspects of physical performance increased with the ingestion of peppermint essential oil! SAY WHAT?!?! These are significant findings because previous research on aromatic usage of peppermint essential oil had NO SIGNIFICANT impact on improved physical exertion or performance. The key to this study was that the subjects ingested the essential oil, not inhaled, and that the ingested essential oil contributed to increased respiratory function instead of breathing it in.

Parameters

Other factors that were looked at in this study were time to exhaustion, vertical distance, horizontal distance, maximum work, and power. All of these parameters increased by at least 20%, with maximum power and vertical distance increasing by over 50%! The delayed fatigue that was observed was with alignment of previous studies that hypothesized that peppermint essential oil might be responsible for decreased blood lactate levels. Lactic acid is what is produced by the muscle when worked or broken down during exercise. That is what gives you the burn feeling, the fatigue you feel when working hard, and what is responsible for sore muscles and fatigue a few days post exercise— commonly referred to delayed onset muscle soreness (or DOMS).
